Mostly for all the great drawings by Tom of Finland, Harry Bush and others, but the little books are a great source of inspiration for artists. Homoerotic Art by Jürgen Wittdorf

"Within the confines of the early 1960s government-controlled art scene of the GDR, Jürgen Wittdorf was miraculously able to publicly develop a historically unique group of homoerotic socialist woodblock prints and linocuts."

"Widely publicized and exhibited at the time, the Zyklus Für die Jugend (1960/61) works were criticized and demonized as "westernized" by the authorities, because Wittdorf sympathetically portrayed rebellious youth, in the shape of jeans-clad street kids and rockers (as later he would portray punks) instead of idealized young socialist party members. Widespread public acclaim especially from young audiences was however able to silence the criticism."

"In Jugend und Sport (1964) Wittdorf seems at first to placate his ideological critics by putting his models in more familiar socialist poses, but subverts the heroics by a surprisingly blatant (and in retrospect very witty) homoeroticism, proving either the naivety or open-mindedness of the state patrons and audiences of the time."

Works by Jack Balas

Jack Balas is an artist working in painting, photography, writing and other mixed media. His paintings mix traditional realism with a multitude of other creative techniques. Often his work takes on the quality of a diary or a map annotated with words and images. The work overflows with references to art history, pop culture and other modern distractions. Balas focuses on every day man in a variety of emotional, political and stylistic scenarios. Recently the male form has taken center stage in his art celebrating beauty and often invoking powerful taboos.

Balas was born in the United States in 1955. He received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University. In 1995 he was awarded a fellowship in painting from the federal government's National Endowment for the Arts.

The Georgia-based artist Robert Sherer has won international acclaim, representing the United States at the Triennale de Paris in 2002 and the Florence Biennale in 2001 and 2007.

Artist Statement

"Like many American boys I grew up in a world of sports, camping, scouting, and war gaming. The secret rites of passage and relationship intrigues played out in the locker rooms, pup tents, and tree houses helped to define me as a man. Because my youth most closely resembles the classic illustrations of camping guide books and scouting manuals of the 1950s and '60s, I have found it necessary to derive my biographical drawings from these visual resource materials. To imbue these wood-burned images with an air of authenticity I render them with actual camp craft materials such as leather, rustic wood, tarpaulin, lanyards and grommets. I am adept with these materials because they were some of my most comforting diversions during those thrilling and perilous years of self discovery. They also provided me with a sense of personal achievement because they earned me merit badges. It is my hope that these works will help others to reconnect with the springtime of life."
