Widespread public acclaim especially from young audiences was however able to silence the criticism."

Jack Balas is an artist working in painting, photography, writing and other mixed media. His paintings mix traditional realism with a multitude of other creative techniques. Often his work takes on the quality of a diary or a map annotated with words and images. The work overflows with references to art history, pop culture and other modern distractions. Balas focuses on every day man in a variety of emotional, political and stylistic scenarios. Recently the male form has taken center stage in his art celebrating beauty and often invoking powerful taboos.

Balas was born in the United States in 1955. He received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University. In 1995 he was awarded a fellowship in painting from the federal government's National Endowment for the Arts.

Artist Statement

"Like many American boys I grew up in a world of sports, camping, scouting, and war gaming. The secret rites of passage and relationship intrigues played out in the locker rooms, pup tents, and tree houses helped to define me as a man. Because my youth most closely resembles the classic illustrations of camping guide books and scouting manuals of the 1950s and '60s, I have found it necessary to derive my biographical drawings from these visual resource materials. To imbue these wood-burned images with an air of authenticity I render them with actual camp craft materials such as leather, rustic wood, tarpaulin, lanyards and grommets. I am adept with these materials because they were some of my most comforting diversions during those thrilling and perilous years of self discovery. They also provided me with a sense of personal achievement because they earned me merit badges. It is my hope that these works will help others to reconnect with the springtime of life."

Artist Rick Herold began his art career at Academie Julian in Paris, later studying Religious Church Art at Benedictine Monastic University. Herold soon became disillusioned with organized religion and turned to painting erotic nudes.

Herold's self-developed technique is called reverse painting, and is done on clear vinyl with sign-painter's enamel, which bonds with the vinyl to become a permanent and durable surface.

Rick Herold has traveled all over the world, collecting indigenous art for his private collection. He currently lives in North County, San Diego with his life partner.

Catch Andrew Verster's exhibition "Past/Present" at the Standard Bank Art Gallery in Johannesburg if you can. It runs until 23 May and covers the past 14 years of his work. The title of the exhibition refers to how our past affects our present. Verster celebrates South Africa's democracy as a major personal milestone - as the first works were made during this transition in 1994.

The exhibition is a multi-disciplinary show of paintings, drawings, stage sets, costume designs and wax panels that aims to reveal Verster's diverse approach and innovation.

Pencil drawing on A4 paper. They may seem obvious, but here are a few things learned during this drawing.

The type of paper has a huge influence on the amount of detail you can achieve. Had to tear this one out of the sketchpad - the surface underneath the drawing also dictates how much of the graphite "sticks" to the paper. As the drawing evolves, I often use fixative to stop it getting messy and this also affects any work over the bottom layers.

In 1975 Moxy was born in a small town in Gauteng into a family of non-artists. As the odd one out, he would often escape into the world of his imagination and art. He got his first paying job as an artist at the age of 6 when a primary school teacher commissioned him to draw flashcards. He duly announced to his folks that it was time to leave school and become an artist!

Upon his parents insistence he attended an academic high school with no art subjects – so he could get a "real" job. After a few miserable years and nearly failing, he was sent to Art School where he excelled.

There an uninformed lecturer told him the best job one could find as an artist would be window dressing and suddenly he was disenchanted with the world of art. He left small town ideas and opportunities behind and headed for the big city to study fashion design instead. Moxy worked in the fashion industry for three years, but realized that it was a world he did not fit into.

A career in shopping centre decor followed which led to event decor design, the perfect platform for him to utilize his multiple artistic skills. He started his own event design company and the company name became synonymous with extraordinary event design. The painting of massive event backdrops triggered in him a desire to work on canvas.

The sensation of painting on canvas awakened his original passion for fine art. When Moxy decided to sell the company and paint full time, happiness had arrived.

Since relocating to Cape Town four and a half years ago Moxy has been concentrating on depicting the male form and masculine beauty. With works sold right across the globe to private clients and collectors, and fast gaining a reputation as a world class fine artist.

We saw Cha Cha Heels on Saturday night - most enjoyable! This slick Drag Extravaganza by producer Bryan Bester, brings together a cast of eight of the South Africa’s leading Drag Artists, headed up by the formidable Ines Beau Rivage and features four handsome male dancers. Awesome costumes by Kurt van der Muller and choreography by Robin McBroom make it a night to remember.

Rihanna, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado join disco favourites Shirley Bassey, Donna Summer, Tina Turner, Eartha Kitt, Cher and Gloria Gaynor. Also, a few numbers from old James Bond movies, Chicago and some Brazilian rhythms featuring Carmen Miranda.

Cha Cha Heels runs until the 10th August 2008 at the Tesson Theatre, Johannesburg Civic Theatre. Don't miss it!

A small collection of work by South African artist Johannes Meintjies (1923 - 1980). The son of a sheep-farmer; Johannes Meintjies spent his first five years on the family farm 'Grootzeekoegat' in the Molteno district.

After the early death of his father in 1929, the family moved to Riversdale. In 1938 the family moved to Cape Town and the 15 year-old boy began serious art study. An exhibition of Maggie Laubser's work in 1940 evoked his ardent admiration; he wrote a fan-letter to her and a close friendship developed.

In 1944 at the age of 21, Johannes Meintjies published a book on Maggie Laubser and his first exhibitions caused a stir in Johannesburg and Cape Town, after which Johannes Meintjies taught art at South African College School.

While in London Johannes Meintjies worked part-time for BBC between 1945 and 1947. Johannes Meintjies returned to Cape Town; worked at painting, broadcasting and writing. He won an award from 'Die Vaderland' (The Fatherland) in 1949 for 'most original South African painting' jointly with Diederick During.

Johannes Meintjies retreated to the family farm during 1949-54 to write and paint in seclusion and restored the historical farm-building. He lived in Johannesburg during 1955-65. Johannes Meintjies returned to Molteno in 1965. He exhibited annually until his death, but although he continued to paint, he devoted the larger part of his activity to writing; published 35 books - fiction and non-fiction (mainly historical).

Following his death, Meintjes' manuscripts, letters, diaries, etc, were presented to the English Literary Museum, Grahamstown, to be housed in a 'Johannes Meintjes Room'.
